Potassium helps maintain healthy blood pressure levels while lowering the systolic levels. Another reason why potassium is really important is because it can help maintain healthier cholesterol levels. While there isn’t a direct connection from cholesterol levels to potassium, it has been shown over time that the majority of the diets that help to reduce cholesterol levels also include foods with high levels of potassium.

The condition of low potassium levels is called hypokalemia. Signs of potassium deficiency are sudden cramps, loss of appetite, general body weakness, and unusual fatigue. Vomiting, nausea, anorexia, constipation, and low blood pressure can be indications of severe potassium deficiency, which can only be diagnosed by a physician and blood tests.

Foods that are high in potassium are oranges, tomatoes, bananas, potatoes and white beans. Some doctors will prescribe potassium supplements if the condition warrants it.
